Thanks Elliott! Yes the idea of 'true' happiness is a bit of a misnomer in my opinion. I don't think we evolved to be able to be truly happy, but perhaps our brains are malleable enough to get there (maybe after decades in a cave meditating!). This might be worth an article in itself actually...

Best,
Warren

this is an interesting post with an interesting question!

I just posted a definition of happiness on my blog (which aims to be a more "scientific" definition), please check it out at http://www.spreadinghappiness.org/2009/08/what-is-happiness/

Comments are very much welcome!

Hi Juliet,

I know what you mean, strangely I had the same exact though when I wrote that. There's some situations where people aren't motivated by achieving happiness, but rather getting away from pain. Like instead of getting from 0 to 5, they're aiming to get from -5 to 0.

It's only sad because the person is in the minuses to begin with; they are still going in the right direction.

Hi Warren

Interesting post and thoughts.

I like the discussion around "relative happiness" i.e. the man who fell off the cliff and survived.

In light of this concept of "relative happiness", I had a think about your sentence:
Whatever it [happiness] is though, it’s a powerful motivator - almost everything we do is motivated by how much happiness we think we’ll get from it.

Take, for example, somebody who always fears abuse or feels they have to succed, a perfectionist etc. For them, to succeed or escape something unpleasant can be a relief which too then is a level of happiness. That is, I find, a sad thought.
