Warren,
Once again a brilliant post, I am just loving coming here and reading these, they are well written and so informative. Its amazing how many types of motivations there are and what would fit with whom. There is nothing better than the right motivational talks or reads, and I really enjoyed reading this.

Thanks Warren

Best regards

Ah I see, in terms of your personal development you mean. Yes definitely, from talking to people and the emails I get I think that motivation is what is stopping most people from getting started. They would like (or think they would like) to do a certain thing, learn a new language, go travelling, be happier, whatever, but can't seem to bring themselves to do it for some reason.

There's probably lots of different stuff going on for each individual, but creating supports for autonomy, competence and relatedness should be a good start. According to this research anyway.

If I may, I would like to venture another aspect to motivation. I see it as a way to evolution. Actually, it's directly related to your ticket anyway because anyone who is motivated strives for evolution but maybe the more you are evolution-driven the more motivated you are in several aspects of your life?

Just a thought. :)

This article was very informative for me. It will give me motivation on blogging and also in dealing with my dementia. I realized that I need to focus just not on rerouting my brain but also in just enjoy doing things that I still love and can do. Thanks so much for this article.

This is one of the best posts I've seen on motivation on the web. The amount of time you put on the research alone is commendable.

I imagine those superhumans who do an hour of karate, read a 500 page book and write a blog post before 9:00 have managed to make most of what they do intrinsically motivating. Jonathan Fields of illuminatedmind.net for example, chooses to go hiking or dancing instead of using the treadmill. Because these activities are more intrinsically motivating to him, he does them more often.

I imagine the key to becoming more motivated in general is to continually reassess what is intrinsically motivating to us, while trying our best to do away with activities that are more extrinsically motivating.

I had watched Dan Pink's talk a while back and although I thought it was extremely interesting and convincing, he didn't fully explain WHY "carrot and stick" was less motivating than giving workers autonomy. I can see now that money, as a completely extrinsic source of motivation, will tend to motivate people less.

Lots of great food for thought here. I'll probably be reading this one again.
