Great article, well written, I agree completely. I spent the last 10+ years listening to people tell me I was lucky because I was a successful entrepreneur. Eventually it began to irritate me because I realised that I made things happen for myself and worked hard for what I had. I started my adult life in a hostel for homeless teenagers and there's nothing lucky about that. I had to make everything happen for myself out of necessity and determination. I decided if I was "lucky" then I could teach people how to be lucky so I started my blog http://mattkinsella.com to show people.

True enough. And likewise, people who are truly unlucky. I imagine they are the outliers, the people at the far ends of the tails. For most people, lucky events had been caused by their actions in some way. At least, that's what the research seems to say. I guess it's a slightly different definition of luck.

"“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity”

If you really think about it and understand it, for most people, its what luck really is."

I dunno, there seem to be a whole lot of people out there who somehow manage to seemingly fall ass backwards into good things.

@David - that was Samuel Goldwyn who first said that... and it's as true today as it was when he said it. It's something I'm trying to teach my children. It's hard, but I think they're starting to catch on.

Thanks for the comment George, yes exactly - lucky people cash in on their tendency to be more assertive, sociable, and optimistic.

Yes, it's true. Luck does exist; but only in variety choices rather than "monoriety" choices; hahaha... forgive my coinage. Lucky people are exertive, while unlucky people are faint-hearted and defeatist. Luck can be drawn from try-opportinities not one-timer, forward looking, not backward looking.

I should have Professor Wiseman's (I'm sure he goes by that title) so I can laugh my unlucky spirit away. I wonder what it will cost me to possess a copy?

Hi Mohinder,

Yeah I meant to put a few luck quotes at the start of the article, but forgot. That's a good one. Another similar one, I think from Thomas Jefferson, is:

"I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it."

One of the best quotes I have ever read:

"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity"

If you really think about it and understand it, for most people, its what luck really is.

As for buying more lottery tickets the maths are pretty simple: Buy two tickets and you double your chances over having just the one ticket. That still means you only have about a 2 in 13 million chance of winning (or some such ridiculous odds). Hardly call that being 'lucky' :0)
