Welcome to the second edition of Psychology Articles Carnival!

Discounting one eager individual who submitted 23 of his own articles, fewer submissions arrived in my inbox this month. This is because, unlike last month, I neglected to specifically ask psychology bloggers for articles. Foolishly thinking once would be enough, I sat back and waited, and waited, and waited, and so on. But it’s OK! I had a plan and still do. I’ll just fill the gaps with some of my own favourite choices from the past month; which I was planning to do anyway; now I’ll just have to make a few more suggestions than I had anticipated.

As before, there are three categories of articles:

• Practical – Articles with advice or an action step of some kind
• Academic – More scholarly articles
• Informative – Anything that doesn’t fit the above two categories, general interest pieces, etc.

Practical

Shamelle presents Decision Making On Money, Love, Work & Health: Why Decisions Errors Are Made posted at Enhance Life.

The human brain is open to all sorts of biases, leading to all kinds of irrational decision making errors. Looking at Shamelle’s list here, it’s a wonder we can successfully make any decisions at all!

Erin presents Anxiety in children posted at School Psychologist Blog Files.

Some people can just let go of things, can’t they? Others hold on, and fret about what ifs. What’s the difference between people who are carefree and people who are anxious? What do you do if you notice anxiety in children?

Academic

Bad science: A critique of research claiming all therapies work equivalently

An old claim is that it doesn’t matter what form of psychotherapy you try: they’re all roughly as effective as one another. Here’s a critique of that idea.

Informative

Steven Handel presents Positive Psychology: The Scientific Study Of Well-Being posted at The Emotion Machine.

A good overview of positive psychology, and some of the names and theories associated with it

Men lose their minds speaking to pretty women

We do. Put a pretty girl in front of us and she takes up so much of our cognitive resources that we do worse on various mental tasks. My personal, untested, belief is that the same holds true for beer.
